All of the success stories seem to have that factor in common: the authors self-published 8+ novels before they began to earn enough to quit their day job. <br /><br />So it's great if you're fast, prolific, and truly talented. But if you take years to craft a novel, it's a scary indie world out there. George R.R. Martin's "A Game of Thrones" would have been lost in the indie slush. I wouldn't worry about them...Mechanical horses! I wouldn't worry about them. Real horses will be the preferred method of travel. Much like the carrier pigeon, they're the real deal and are here to stay! :)<br /><br />Self publishing has become like the modern version of the California Gold Rush. Now that there have been some notable breakout success stories (Hocking, Howey--gee should I change my last name to something starting with an H?), lots of people are rushing to it, hoping to get rich. But, I think you're right, the cream of the crop will find readers and the rest, won't.
